Staffordshire pottery pearlware stirrup cup in the form of a greyhound head circa 1820

Reference: 5964

Dated: c. 1820 Staffordshire England

A fine and rare pearlware glazed pottery greyhounbd head stirrup cup. The modelling and decoration of the cup is high quality and captures the spirit of this speedy canine.
Such a piece would have been used at "Hare Coursing" events. This is the pursuit of hares with greyhounds which chase the hare by sight and not by scent. In some countries, it is a legal, competitive activity, dogs are tested on their ability to run, overtake and turn a hare, rather than a form of hunting aiming at the capture of game.
The "sport" was banned in England in 2005 along with fox hunting.
