STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERY FIGURE OF A GROUP KNOWN AS PERSUASION C1815

Antique Staffordshire pottery figure group in pearware and coloured glazes.
This figure is known as PERSUASION and would have been produced at the beginning of the 19th century in Staffordshire.
The rather demure female figure is rather contently thinking about the wonderful offer her partner has made to her as he profers a gold ring.
A rather whymsical dog looks adoringly and coyly at his mistress almost beseeching her to say yes.
The figures on the group are very well modelled and coloured as is usually the case with this very appealing figure.

Literature: Myrna Schkolne in her book People,Passion,Pastimes and Pleasures Staffordshire figures c1810-35 illustrates a similar figure in Chapter 4 titled "Courtship".
You will see by reference to this book that several figures were produced relating to courtship. This was a popular subject in the days when an easy promise could turn to be an expensive excercise..... usually for the man!
