Staffordshire Creamware pottery Equestrian figure of a mounted officer of Astbury-Whieldon type.

Dated: c. 1745 to c. 1750 Staffordshire English

The officer modelled holding the reigns,wearing a tricorn hat and a jacket edged in a cream slip. His breeches are cream coloured and he sports dark brown boots and a satchel across his shoulder. The chestnut horse has a cream saddle-cloth and harness. The figure is wonderfully modelled standing on fluted oblong base decorated with a splashed green,manganese,grey and ochre oxide colours in the classic Whieldon style.
This figure is exceptionally rare, and very few find their way onto the market. Significantly most of these figures are located in museums or in the serious international private collections.

Provenance: HRH The Princess Mary, Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood who purchased this figure from T.Goode and Co London in 1940.
