Pair of Staffordshire porcelaineous figures of Lions with Lambs. English circa 1836

Dated: 1836 Shelton Staffordshire England

A fine pair of Lions and lambs seated on bases from the works of John and Rebecca Lloyd of Shelton Staffordshire.
The work from the Lloyds is the best of its type in Staffordshire during the 19th century.
Their attention to detail of the modelling , the quality of the body and the fine decoration make them comprehensively masters of their trade. The lions mains are especially striking.

The pair of figures were made to commemorate a feature in the act of the American Lion Tamer Van Amburg who succeeded in the unlikely duo sitting in peace together. Princess Victoria was so enthralled that she visited the theater twice to witness the performance.
