PAIR OF POTTERY FIGURES OF SPANIEL DOGS SEATED ON BASES
Reference: 5792
Dated: c. 1835 Derbyshire
The finest and perhaps rarest figures of Spaniel dogs produced in the 19th century in England.
This figure inspired the Staffordshire potters who produced countless numbers of Spaniels but they never quite matched the first pair produced at the Briddon Pottery in Derbyshire.
The figures are crisply molded with extra attention to detail making them the best possible quality.
The earthenware body is finished in a salt glaze with a wonderful honey colour.
The dogs are then modelled seated on plinths which have applied sprigs of a hunting scene.
Clive Mason pope refers to this model as "High Society" and describes them as "A magnificent pair of spaniels with seperate legs sitting on large oval bases with paw feet".
Dimensions: 15.00 inch high
