English pottery pitcher in the form of a bear and titled "Bruin" Devon England c 1875

Dated: c. 1875 Devon England

Earthenware naive folk art pitcher in the form of a bear with slip glaze and scraffito decoration through to the red clay body, the pitcher is inscribed at the base under the spout "Bruin".
The stylised rendition is very strong and the form, clay, glaze and decoration lead to Devon Pottery attribution. Similar pieces were produced at the Ewenney Pottery in South Wales whose examples tend to be more finely potted without the boldness of this piece.
