Staffordshire pottery figure of a Medici inspired Lion modelled standing on an oblong base with a paw resting on sphere.
The figure is well modelled and decorated with enamels.
Lions are the national symbol of England and were a popular subject in the late 18th and early 19th century. The burgeoning growth of Empire and strong national pride after many military and naval victories over the French gave extra significance to the symbolism.
Strong masculine presence makes the figure ideal decoration for a library or office adding a touch of grandeur although it would take its place in various settings.
