Antique Staffordshire pottery pearlware figure bear baiting group early 19th century
Reference: 3604
Dated: 1815 Staffordshire English
A rare Staffordshire pottery pearlware glaze bear baiting group.
The figure is vibrantly modelled with the standing mussled bear tussling with the snarling dog and the excited keeper loosing balance lying prostrate on the floor.
The vicious nature of the subject is balanced by the comedy aspect of the group.
Thankfully animal baiting was banned in England in 1835 , these figures provide an insight into the social life of the period when "sport" of this nature was a regular event.
