A rare trio of antique Staffordshire pottery Monkey Band figures dating to the c1840 period.
The figures are comically modeled playing a trumpet, cymbals and a cello.
The design of these figures originated at the Meissen Factory in Germany in the 18th century by Johann Joachim Kaendler. They were based on the satirical illustrations of the French artist Christophe Huet, working in the ‘singerie’ style of elegant monkeys that was popular with the French aristocracy during the 18th century.Many ceramic manufactures copied these figures and it is very rare to see them produced in pottery by one of the Staffordshire potters and as such are previously unrecorded.
