Antique Staffordshire pottery figure group Bull Baiting in pearlware circa 1820

Reference: 0991

Dated: c. 1815 Staffordshire

Antique Staffordshire pottery pearlware Bull Baiting figure group.
The bull is very well modelled especially the beasts head.
An unusual feature is the bulls foot place stamping on the pit bull terrier.
All the features on this figure are very bold with good attention to details such as the rope and the capstan. This rare example is in the best condition I have ever encountered for a bull baiting with only restoration at the ears and an old hairline at the backleg of the bull.( I have left this detail unrestored preserving the integrity of the piece).
The colors are muted and underplayed in the decoration which adds to the sculptural and artistic impact of the figure.

Dimensions: 14.00 inch high

Current Condition Unrestored original historical

Literature: Myrna Schkolne People,Passions,Pastimes and Pleasures Staffordshire Figures 1810-35.
