Antique mid 18th century figure of a drummer boy in the Whieldon fashion.

Early and exceptionally rare Staffordshire pottery figure of a drummer boy decorated and modeled in the Whieldon/Astbury manner. The colored glazes are very fine and add to the naive aspect of the figure which is exceptionally well modeled with attention to detail. Probably from Thomas Whieldon's Fenton Pottery in the mid 18th century. The figure is pressed moulded and uses different clays to extend the color range. The lead glaze and oxide colours indicate a production date of 1760.
A similar figure is illustrated on page 183 figure reference 888 in Stella Bedoe's book relating to the Willett Collection in the Brighton Museum.
