ANTIQUE ENGLISH POTTERY SILVER LUSTRE POTTERY PATENTED ORB

Reference: 1963

Dated: c. 1824 ENGLAND

Antique pottery Perdifume by Bailey and Batkin of Longton Staffordshire.
This unusual and rather unique piece is decorated in silver lustre with a lion seated on the top of the orb.

EXHIBITION....IF THESE POTS COULD TALK.

This device with the rather exotic name Perdifume was invented for the purpose of catching the fumes from gas lights. The patent for the design was taken out in 1824 by Bailey and Batkin.
The decorative aspect of the perdifume is inspired by the Royal Orb which forms part of the coronation ceromony for British royalty. I have always been fascinated with these pieces and only had knowledge of them from books. In my 40 years of dealing in English pottery I had never actually been able to acquire one for my inventory. When I located this piece my search was over and my 40 years wait was over.
